From arrival in Persia in 1598 until his death in 1628, Sherley was the shah’s special adviser on Europe. The East India Company dealt with Sherley after it began trading in Persia from 1616.

2. The tomb of Sir Thomas Smythe, England’s most powerful businessman and first governor of the Company. Smythe oversaw the birth of the EIC, presided over capital growth, and championed it against both James I and Parliament when hostile to its monopoly on Eastern trade.
